Chinese tourist victim of Jomtien bag snatchers

Two Chinese tourists were hurt when thieves snatched a shoulder bag containing cash and valuables worth almost 100,000 baht and sped off at Jomtien beach, near Pattaya, in the early hours of Wednesday.

The snatch occurred in Soi Jomtien 19, near the beach, in Bang Lamung district, said Pol Lt Veerayut Kangkala, a duty officer at Pattaya police station, who received the complaint around 1am on Wednesday.

Xia Xi, 26, and three Chinese women were walking back to their accommodation. Two motorcycles followed them and the pillion rider on one bike suddenly snatched the man’s shoulder bag, Thai media reported.

Mr Xia told police he had tried to hold on to his bag, but was instead pulled off his feet and fell to the ground, sustaining bruising and grazes. His woman friends tried unsuccessfully to help, and one also suffered minor injuries.

The two bikes fled towards Na Jomtien area, Mr Xia said. He could not say how many people attacked them.

He told police his bag contained 10,000 yuan, or about 55,000 baht, one iPhone 5 and one iPhone 6, worth about 40,000 baht, and travel documents.

Police examined footage from surveillance cameras at the crime scene and nearby, and a team was assigned to hunt down the thieves.
