Carriages, trains added to handle passenger load over Songkran

The State Railway of Thailand has added carriages to 184 trains today (Tuesday) in anticipation of an increase in passengers travelling out of Bangkok to celebrate the Songkran festival.

The extra capacity trains will operate until April 17th, including 13 additional trains for the northern and north-eastern routes, according to the SRT.

At Bangkok’s Hua Lamphong railway station today, a maximum of 45,000 passengers, are expected catch trains from this old station, where four more trains have been added to the Bangkok-Chiang Mai, Bangkok-Sila-At and the Northeast, Bangkok-Udon Thani and Bangkok-Ubon Ratchathani routes.

Some passengers admit to being worried about COVID-19, but say they have to travel anyway.

Buses running to the north-east and north during Songkran, operated by the state-run Transport Company and private tour bus companies, are also reporting a surge in passenger volume.
