Durian is becoming a favourite fruit among local residents and visiting tourists in Chiang Mai with the city adminstration reporting durian shell waste forming half of wastes collected from fresh markets in town.
The deputy mayor of Chiang Mai City Adminstration Mr Chattre Chuamanocharn said a huge waste of 4-5 tons a day of durian shells were collected from markets.
The durian shell waste alone formed half of the market waste, he said.
He said 8-9 tons of durian were eaten daily becoming one of the favorite fruits.
As the period from May to August is the harvesting season for durian in the eastern and southern regions, eating of durian in Chiang Mai is expected to rise and its waste will become a problem for collection.
