Ex-Khon Kaen MP faces indictment for murder of an ex-provincial councilor

Former Khon Kaen MP Nawat Tohcharoensook is to be indicted with the charge of ordering the murder of a Khon Kaen provincial councilor four years ago.

Mr Vichai Thanyawanich, director-general of Region 4 Public Prosecution, on Thursday signed an order to proceed with indicting Mr Nawat for allegedly ordering the murder of Mr Suchart Kotethum, a former member of Khon Kaen provincial administration organization (PAO).

Five accomplices who include policemen and civilians were arrested and charged three years ago. One of them was sentenced to death and four others give life imprisonment by the Criminal Court. The sentences were upheld by the Appeals Court and the case is pending with the Supreme Court.

The public prosecutor in charge of the case will notify Mr Nawat to present himself before the police inquiry officer to acknowledge the charge against him, failing that an arrest warrant will be issued against him.

Thai PBS learned that the prosecutor in charge of the case originally decided not to indict Mr Nawat, but this was objected by the provincial head prosecutor and the regional prosecutor who ordered the inquiry police officers to gather more information and to question more witnesses.
