Intel(R) Edison Development Platform, Now Available from RS Components, Drives Innovation in Embedded and IoT Applications

Miniaturised product-ready module with built-in wireless and dedicated IoT tools maximises ease of use by engineering and maker communities

 

HONG KONG, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire/ — RS Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents plc (LSE: ECM), the global distributor for engineers, has announced support for the complete Intel® Edison development platform, which includes: the ultra-small Intel Edison compute module; the Intel Edison breakout board that helps rapid prototyping; and the Intel Edison board for Arduino.

The Intel Edison module is a highly miniaturised product-ready compute module built using an advanced 22nm System-on-Chip (SoC) that includes a dual-core, dual-threaded 500MHz Intel® Atom™ CPU and a 100MHz 32-bit Intel® Quark™ microcontroller. Extensive connectivity is provided, and built-in Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® Low Energy support make this module an ideal target for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. A device-to-device and device-to-cloud connectivity framework is also integrated.

Plugging the 35.5mm x 21.0mm x 3.9mm Intel Edison module into the breakout board, which is also now in stock at RS, exposes the module’s 1.8V I/Os, and allows connection via the board’s USB Micro Type-AB connector. The board also provides a DC power-supply jack, battery-charger circuit, and USB OTG power switch, to help professional engineers and makers alike begin developing applications quickly.

The Intel Edison expansion board for Arduino is hardware and software pin-compatible with Arduino shields designed for the Uno R3. The board provides important connections in the same locations as on the Arduino Uno R3, and also has a Micro SD card connector as well as micro and standard-size USB connectors.

The Intel Edison development platform comes with Yocto Linux v1.6 OS support, and allows development with Arduino and C/C++. Further support, including Node.JS, Python, RTOS, and Visual Programming will be added in the future. The platform is compatible with Arduino IDE, Eclipse, and Intel XDK development environments.

The Intel Edison development platform is in stock now for same day despatch from RS distribution centres worldwide.
