Klong Phanom park chief escapes unhurt from ambush

A Surat Thani national park chief and his four subordinates narrowly escaped death and injury after they were ambushed by at least two gunmen on Saturday night as they were travelling in a pickup truck for their office following a meeting.

Mr Bandhit Boonsook, chief of Klong Phanom national park in Phanom district of Surat Thani, had a meeting with chief of the Tai Romyen national park in Ban Nasarn district regarding the transfer of two park officials until almost 11 pm.

As he was travelling back to office in the company of his driver and three other park officials, their pickup truck came under a hail of gunfire from the roadside.

The gunshots missed the five men on board the vehicle and the driver quickly sped off and headed for Ban Nasarn district police where they lodged a complaint with the police.

Police later inspected the truck found seven bullet holes. On Sunday, police went to the scene of the ambush and found spent shells of a HK assault rifle.

Pol Col Thitirat Arsakit, superintendent of Ban Nasarn district police, said HK assault rifles were mostly used by park rangers. He added that it would not be difficult to track down the gunmen.
