Labour Minister Assigns Advisor to Commence Workshop on Building a Network to Protect Foreign Workers

The Labour Minister assigned his Advisor “Mrs. Thiwalrat,” to commence the Workshop to Build a Network to Protect Foreign Workers for the third class, to enhance knowledge of civil society, increase surveillance, and whistleblowing skills, in hopes to build a network of workers with aims to protect the rights of foreign workers.

On Thursday, June 16, 2022, at 09.00 hours, the Labour Minister’s Advisor Mrs. Thiwalrat Angkinan gave a report after presiding over the opening ceremony of the “Workshop to Build a Network to Protect Foreign Workers, Class 3”. She said that the government, under the leadership of Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prayuth Chan-ocha, Deputy Prime Minister, General Prawit Wongsuwan, who supervises the Ministry of Labour and the Labour Minister Mr. Suchart Chomklin, focuses on foreign workers who come to work in Thailand. Such workers are considered a part of driving the economy to compete with other countries. Therefore, the direction of operations for foreign workers has been set to ensure workers’ networks and citizens are protected. It aims to promote, develop, and enhance access to government services under the vision of “Workers having a good quality of life, which is fair, thorough, and sustainable.” It has entrusted the Department of Labour Protection and Welfare to take care of workers of all nationalities to urge labour inspectors to perform their duties rigorously for all employees traveling to Thailand. It will ensure protection by labour law and make labor protection inspections more thorough and effective. Therefore, cooperation with all relevant sectors must be established, especially the civil society and foreign labour volunteers. This will be an important reinforcement in surveillance and reporting illegal practices leading to the prevention of labour rights violations or labor problems.

The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare’s (DLPW) Deputy Director-General Miss Kanjana Poonkaew added that in the 2022 fiscal year, the department has set up workshops to build networks to protect foreign workers in all six classes, with 50 people each. Two classes have been completed, and today, the third workshop was arranged at the I Tara Resort & Spa Hotel, Ban Laem District, Phetchaburi Province. There were 50 participants in the meeting, comprising representatives of business establishments, personnel officers, and language coordinators (interpreters) for Burmese, Laotian, and Cambodian migrant workers. The DLPW hopes trainees will learn and understand the law, rights, duties, welfare, and channels for properly exercising labour rights. This will lead to a strong network capable of performing duties to create a good quality of life for workers and coordinate with the government in a sustainable way.
