Marine national parks in Andaman Sea to be closed to tourists

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation has announced the closure of several national marine parks and islands in the Andaman Sea to allow the natural environment and wildlife to recover during the rainy season period.

The closure will begin tomorrow and last for five months.

Similan Island National Park chief Ruamsilpa Manachongprasert said national marine parks and islands in the Andaman Sea to be closed from tomorrow onwards include Surin Island, Similan Island, Lanta Island at Koh Rok, Koh Ha in Krabi, Koh Hin Muang-Daeng, Haad Chao Mai and Tarutao marine parks at Ardang Rawi and Lipe islands in Satun province.

He said after the closure, authorities would be sent to patrol the areas to prevent tour companies from bringing tourists to risk themselves in visiting during the monsoon season.

He said special attention would be given to Koh Bon, a small islet in between Similan and Ta Chai islands where fishermen always sneaking into the areas for illegal fishing.
