One of the two prisoners who escaped from Phetchaburi prison on Nov 24 has been arrested in Tha Yang district of Phetchaburi province, police said.
A team of police and prison warders re-arrested Ekachai Kruakaew from a bush near Ban Khong Ta Bang in Tambon Tha Mai Ruak of Tha Yang district at about 12.30pm on Wednesday after being informed by villagers who saw the jailbreaker hide near their village.
Ekachai, 36, a convict for motorcycle theft, and Tawatchai Maliyaem, 33, and drug convict, escaped from Phetchaburi prison while it was being hit by flooding on Nov 24 by scaling over the wall.
Ekachai said he and Tawatchai fled separately after getting outside the prison. He went up to hide in the ceiling under the roof of a school and stayed there four days and four nights without food.
On Nov 28, out of hunger, he went out from hiding and walked to look for a friend in Tambon Tha Mai Ruak but could not find him. He hid in the bush near the village until his arrest.
Tawatchai, the other escapee, is still at large.
After the jailbreak of the two prisoners, Busaba Ketudom, the prison chief, has been transferred to the Corrections Department for an indefinite period.
