Philippines Evacuates 100,000 People as Super Typhoon Fongwong Approaches

Bangkok: More than 100,000 people were evacuated across the country’s eastern and northern regions on Thursday as Typhoon Fung-wong intensified into a super typhoon ahead of its expected landfall later that day, bringing heavy rain, strong winds, and a storm surge.

According to Thai News Agency, the Philippines has raised its storm warning signal to No. 5, the highest level, for areas southeast of the country’s main island of Luzon, while Metro Manila and surrounding areas are under Warning No. 3. Super Typhoon Fongwong, known locally as Uwan, has maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour and gusts of up to 230 kilometers per hour. It is expected to make landfall in Aurora province in central Luzon as early as tonight.

The super typhoon’s influence has left parts of Eastern Visayas without power, while Catanduanes province experienced dark skies, swaying trees, and heavy rain. In addition, more than 300 domestic and international flights were canceled.

Fongwong is the latest storm to impact the Philippines, following Typhoon Kalmaegi, which struck a few days ago. Kalmaegi has resulted in 204 fatalities so far and left widespread damage before making landfall in Vietnam, where it caused further fatalities and damage to coastal communities.
