Probe ordered into an army private’s death in an army prison

A fact-finding committee has been ordered into the death of an army private, believed to be beaten up, in an army prison at a barrack in Surat Thani province.

Mrs Renoo Modrakhee, mother of the victim, Pvt Yutkinan Boonniam, testified to Muang district police on Sunday, saying that she was told by a friend of her son that the private was beaten up in the prison of Vibhavadi Rangsit barrack.

Maj-Gen Vichai Tassanamonthien, commander of the 45th army circle, said that he ordered a committee to be set up to investigate the incident to determine whether Yutkinan was fatally assaulted in the prison or outside the prison.

Meanwhile, army spokesman Colonel Winthai Suvaree said the army chief had been informed of the incident and gave instruction that the case must be handled in a straightforward manner to ensure fairness to all parties concerned.
