Seawater Floods Paknam Market, Continuing Flooding for 3 Days

Samut prakan: High tides have flooded Pak Nam Market in Samut Prakan for the third consecutive day. Vendors are adapting, moving goods to higher ground, and customers are wading through the water to shop as usual.

According to Thai News Agency, at Pak Nam Market in Samut Prakan Province, along the Chao Phraya River, the market has experienced a third consecutive day of flooding due to high tides. Water levels reached from ankle height to mid-calf height. Vendors had to adapt, moving goods to higher ground to escape the floodwaters, while customers waded through the water to shop as usual. Local residents said that although the high tide phenomenon occurs annually, this year’s water levels were higher than usual and flooded the market quickly this morning.

However, water levels are expected to drop around noon, following the low tide cycle. Meanwhile, Samut Prakan Municipality is expediting the closing of floodgates and inspecting drainage pipes in at-risk areas. Sandbags are also being prepared to reinforce the barrier against the next surge of seawater.
