Thai clinches side tournament title at Winchester Women’s Open 2022

Thai snooker player Ploychompoo Laokiatphong, put Thailand in the headlines when she clinched the under-21 side tournament at the Winchester Women’s Open 2022 snooker championship in Leicestershire, UK, on April 2nd and 3rd.

The only Thai player on the circuit, she beat six other competitors to reached the final, in which she beat Stephanie Daughtery 2 frames to 0 to lift the trophy, the third title of her career.

Ploychompoo also competed in the Open tournament, but was defeated by Hong Kong snooker star Ng On Yee, who went on to win to the final, beating another Thai, Nutcharut Wongharuthai, to clinch the season-ending The Winchester Women’s Open title 2022 on Sunday.

Ploychompoo had an immediate impact on the WWS circuit back in 2018, as she reached the quarter finals in her debut event in Leeds, claiming a notable victory.

The then 16-year-old also claimed victory in the under-21 side event, a triumph that she would repeat nine months later at the same venue, as she captured the 2019 World Women’s Under-21 Championship title.

She would again reach the quarter-finals of her maiden World Women’s Snooker Championship at the Hi-End Snooker Club, before going one better at the 2019 UK Women Snooker Championship, losing 4-2 to former world Number One Maria Catalano.
