The Cabinet, during its meeting on 17 August 2021, acknowledged the acquiring of additional 10 million doses of Pfizer vaccine against COVID-19 by the National Vaccine Institute.

The Department of Disease Control was earlier assigned to sign a deal with Pfizer (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and BioNTech SE. to secure 20 million doses of Pfizer vaccine. Owing to the additional 10 million doses, Thailand will purchase altogether 30 million doses of Pfizer vaccine, which will be delivered in the fourth quarter of 2021.

With the securing of Pfizer vaccine, almost all types of COVID-19 vaccines will be available in Thailand. They include mRNA (Pfizer and Moderna), inactivated whole virus particle vaccine (Sinovac and Sinopharm), and viral vector vaccine (AstraZeneca).

The Pfizer vaccine was conditionally registered by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration on 24 June 2021, and this vaccine can be used for people aged 12 years and over.

At the same meeting, the Cabinet also acknowledged control measures in “bubble and seal” and “factory sandbox” areas in order to effectively contain the spread of COVID-19, reduce deaths, and minimize economic and social impacts from the suspension of businesses.
