Thailand to Host the 15th AMRI and Related Meetings

Thailand will host the 15th Conference of the ASEAN Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI) on 12 March 2021, under the theme “ASEAN: A Digital Community with Accessibility for All.”

The virtual meeting will take place at the Government Public Relations Department (PRD) Auditorium, Soi Aree Samphan, in Bangkok. Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office Anucha Nakasai will chair the conference.

Held biennially, AMRI aims to strengthen cooperation in the areas of information and media among ASEAN countries. It is also a platform for members to discuss challenges brought about by new media developments.

Thailand serves as chair of AMRI from 2020 to 2022. Because of the COVID-19 outbreak, the 15th AMRI will be the first-ever virtual conference of AMRI in 30 years. It will endorse three important documents: 1) The Framework for Developing Digital Readiness among ASEAN Citizens, proposed by Singapore; 2) The Framework for Promoting Accessibility for All in ASEAN Digital Broadcasting, proposed by Thailand; and   3) The Joint Media Statement for the 15th AMRI and Related Meetings.

Thailand will push for the adoption of guidelines to promote broadcasting access services, namely Closed Captions, Audio Description, and Sign Language, for all groups of people, including the vulnerable population.

On the same day, the Sixth Conference of ASEAN Plus Three Ministers Responsible for Information (AMRI+3) will be held, with the participation of representatives from ASEAN and three dialogue partners, namely China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.

The 15th AMRI will be preceded by the 18th Meeting of the ASEAN Senior Officials Responsible for Information (SOMRI) and the Sixth Meeting of ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials Responsible for Information (SOMRI+3), to be held on 10 March 2021.
