THE 11TH IAMMSTI-11 AND THE 79TH COSTI-79 MEETING

Yang Berhormat Dato Seri Setia Awang Abdul Mutalib bin Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Setia Dato Paduka Haji Awang Mohammad, Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, Negara Brunei Darussalam attended the 11th ASEAN Informal Ministerial Meeting on Science, Technology and Innovation (IAMMSTI-11) on 17 June 2021 via video conference.

This year, the IAMMSTI-11 ASEAN Meeting was chaired by H.E. Dr Anek Laothamatas, Minister of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Thailand. Among the outcomes that were discussed during the meeting was the report of the 79th Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (COSTI-79) meeting which was agreed by the members of IAMMSTI.

The meeting also exchanged views on ASEAN Member States cooperation to address the COVID-19 epidemic in which Yang Berhormat Minister of Transport and Infocommunications, shared that the impact COVID-19 has given Brunei Darussalam the opportunity to push the digital agenda forward. Innovation in 4IR technology including the dissemination of digital services has been accelerated in an effort to increase response and recovery from the effects of COVID-19.

Yang Berhormat Minister also opined that in line with the fourth industrial revolution (4IR), the field of biotechnology is also the key to the post-COVID19 economic recovery efforts. He also reinforced that Science, Technology and Innovation are the key in ensuring the long-term success of COVID-19 vaccination and recovery strategies. Yang Berhormat Minister supported project proposals from ASEAN Member States in the fields that can contribute to strengthening regional resilience and preparedness for COVID-19.

Also present during the meeting were Yang Mulia Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications, Yang Mulia Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocommunications) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunications (MTIC), Chair Board of Advisors to COSTI (BAC), Sub-Committees to COSTI and accompanied by senior officials at MTIC.

Also convened before the IAMMSTI-11 Meeting was the 79th ASEAN Committee on Science, Technology and Innovation (ASEAN COSTI19) Meeting on 15 to 16 June 2021 which was attended by Yang Mulia Haji Mohammad Nazri bin Haji Mohammad Yusof, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunication (MTIC) as the Chairman of Brunei Darussalam for ASEAN COSTI. This year’s COSTI-79 meeting was chaired by Professor Sirirurg Songsivilai, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, Thailand. Among the main issues that were discussed during the meeting were as follows:

I. Endorsement of projects that build up the capability of ASEAN to combat COVID-19

II. Implementation of a Summer School for High Performance Computing

III. Establishment of a Technology Management Hub

IV. Implementation of projects addressing the Sustainable Development Goals

Also present during the meeting was Yang Mulia Haji Hairul Mohd Daud bin Haji Abdul Karim, Deputy Permanent Secretary (Infocomunications) at the Ministry of Transport and Infocommunication (MTIC), Chair Board of Advisors to COSTI (BAC), Sub-Committees to COSTI and accompanied by senior officials at MTIC.
