US Senate confirms ambassador to Thailand (dpa German Press Agency)

Bangkok (dpa) – The United States Senate late Wednesday confirmed
the nomination of Glyn Davies as the next US Ambassador to Thailand.

Davies is a career diplomat and was the Obama administration’s lead
envoy in North Korea negotiations.

“Happy and honored to be confirmed by the US Senate,” Davies wrote on
Twitter. “Jackie and I look forward to our move to Bangkok – City of
Angels!”

Davies’ confirmation comes amid a period of tension between the US
and Thailand. Washington suspended military aid to Thailand after an
elected government was overthrown by a coup in May 2014. Thailand has
since made overtures to China and Russia on military cooperation.

Thailand’s military junta has also summoned the US embassy’s charge
d’affaires several times over what it perceives as US meddling in the
country’s internal affairs.

The US ambassador post has been vacant since Kristie Kenney’s tenure
ended in November.
