Chanthaburi: Villagers are expressing concerns over the news of the upcoming release of 18 Cambodian prisoners of war at the Pakkad Pass. The community is worried about the potential uncertainty this event may bring and has urged the Army not to burden the locals with the issue. Local leaders, however, maintain that the Pakkad checkpoint remains peaceful.
According to Thai News Agency, the release is scheduled to take place at the Pakkad checkpoint in Khlong Yai subdistrict, Pong Nam Ron district, Chanthaburi province, on November 12, 2015. A statement from the Royal Thai Army noted that as of November 9, 2015, the area around the Ban Pakkad permanent border crossing remained quiet, with no visible preparations for the prisoner release. The Royal Thai Navy has yet to comment or issue any directives regarding the situation.
Reporters speaking to local villagers found mixed reactions to the release of the 18 Cambodian prisoners. Some villagers expressed disapproval, citing that the Cambodian side had not honored the agreed-upon terms. Concerns were raised about the management of the situation, with suggestions that the issue should not solely be managed by Chanthaburi border authorities due to potential conflicts and tension.
Mr. Atthawut Wechapreecha, headman of Khlong Yai subdistrict, emphasized that the border area has maintained good relations without any conflict. He highlighted that villagers in Pong Nam Ron and Soi Dao districts continue to legally employ Cambodian laborers, particularly in longan picking, which has supported normal relations in the region.
Kamnan Orathawut assured residents that they would be kept informed of any developments at the checkpoint. He cautioned the public to rely on information from government agencies and credible sources, warning against fake news that might incite hatred or confusion.
