The Meteorological Department on Thursday issued a warning of freak storms in 24 provinces in the North, Northeast, central and eastern regions.
Provinces to be affected by possible freak storms include Nan, Uttradit, Sukhothai, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Phichit, Petchabun, Loei, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Chaiyaphum, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, Surin, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Lop Buri, Saraburi, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao and Chon Buri.
The department warned people in the above-mentioned provinces to avoid staying in the open, under big trees or under huge advertising sign boards whenever there is a storm.
The possible freak storms are attributable to the looming moderate high pressure from China over the South China Sea and the northeastern region while upper Thailand is blanketed by hot weather.
