Worker killed in temple collapse

NONTHABURI – A worker died when the roof of a temple pavilion suddenly collapsed, trapping him while meanwhile severely damaging the structure.

Natthawut Suwanchairop, 22, was working with eight others to reinforce the foundation of the pavilion at Wat Ton Chuak in Bang Yai district, rescue workers said.

Another worker was slightly injured and the rest escaped safely by rushing out of the building.

They worked for a firm commissioned by the temple on a 3.2-million-baht contract to raise the pavilion about two metres to prevent flooding.

Wat Ton Chuak is battered by floods almost every year, prompting the temple to find a way to save the pavilion built in 1949.
