Bangkok: SCG and the story behind a brand that has earned 'trust' when regional growth begins with 'people' and its 113-year ideology. As SCG enters its 113th year, it has faced challenges throughout its business journey. The challenge isn't just about business growth, but about maintaining the trust of everyone. SCG is one of the few Thai organizations that has successfully expanded across ASEAN while consistently maintaining its image as a trusted entity. This strength stems not solely from its products or technology, but also from the mindset of its people, passed down through many generations.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Parames Nisakornsen, Assistant Senior Vice President - Central Administration, SCG, discussed the concept of building an organization that believes true growth comes from growing alongside people and society, ensuring no one is left behind. Specifically, he emphasized that growing Thai organizations at the regional level doesn't start with just a strong business model, but with a clear purpose - what the organization is doing it for. 'Whether it's a person or an organization with a long-standing reputation, I personally believe it must have a clear purpose to benefit the public (Clear Purpose for the Good) - doing something for others, doing something bigger than oneself. Another crucial aspect is having a set of values that bind us together, no matter how much the world changes. For SCG, these are four core ideals: fairness, excellence, belief in the value of people, and social responsibility.'
These four ideals, which SCG has upheld as its business philosophy from day one until its 113th anniversary, include a commitment to fairness, striving for excellence, belief in the value of people, and social responsibility. Commitment to fairness involves conducting business with honesty, transparency, and fairness to all parties, without taking advantage of customers, partners, employees, or society. Striving for excellence means continuously developing the quality of products, services, and work methods to create the highest standards. Belief in the value of people refers to viewing people as the heart of the organization, offering opportunities for learning, growth, and demonstrating full potential. Social responsibility emphasizes conducting business while caring for society, communities, and the environment for sustainable growth.
Even though SCG has grown into a regional business leader with operations in many ASEAN countries, the organization always strives to maintain its clear "identity." For SCG, regional growth isn't about adopting the same corporate culture from Thailand across all countries, but rather about learning to understand the differences among people and fostering a mindset of inclusion within the organization. This philosophy is clearly reflected in Vietnam, where SCG sees the potential of young, ambitious individuals who want to grow. The organization chooses to give them opportunities and fully transfer knowledge, enabling local people to become significant contributors to the business. Most recently, the nearly 200 billion baht petrochemical plant in Long Son was almost entirely driven by a Vietnamese team in its factory start-up.
Mr. Parames also believes that this concept has led partners in many countries to consistently view SCG as a strategic partner because the organization doesn't focus on short-term business relationships, but believes in sustainable mutual growth. 'When we do business, we never think of taking advantage of stakeholders because we believe in fairness, honesty, and wherever we go, we always bring our best potential with us.' Another important reflection of the 'Growing Together with People' concept is the 'SCG Sharing the Dream' project, which is continuously implemented in several ASEAN countries to provide educational opportunities to underprivileged youth, aiming to cultivate a new generation ready to create a positive impact on society.
Even though the organization is over 100 years old, Mr. Parames believes that SCG's DNA has never been an obstacle to change because some fundamental values are timeless. 'Is there ever an era where people don't want fairness? Is there ever an era where people don't want excellence or social responsibility? I believe that the four core values are never outdated. It's not about choosing one over the other.' "But it's about adapting business models and mindsets to align with the modern world."
Today, SCG has a diverse workforce across multiple generations and is moving forward with adapting its corporate culture to be more open and diverse. This includes establishing a Diversity and Inclusion committee and creating a new organizational atmosphere to reflect a true spirit of opportunity and inclusive growth. Mr. Parames explains that all of this is being integrated under the concept of 'Inclusive Green Growth,' which SCG uses as a key compass to drive the organization into the future. It's not just about business growth, but growth alongside people, society, and the environment, ensuring no one is left behind. 'We want stakeholders to feel that SCG is an organization committed to making Inclusive Green Growth a reality - not just business growth, but growth that benefits the country, society, employees, and partners simultaneously. That's the image we want people to remember.' SCG's century-long journey may therefore not just be about business growth, but about building a 'culture of people' that up holds integrity, believes in human values, and chooses to grow alongside society. Ultimately, brand 'trust' is built on people who consistently choose to do the right thing, becoming the organization's identity in the end.
