Bangkok: Saisunee Ja-na, a 52-year-old Thai wheelchair fencing athlete, has announced her determination to win three gold medals at the upcoming 5th Asian Para Games scheduled to take place from October 18-24, 2026, in Nagoya, Japan. The Sports Authority of Thailand and the Paralympic Committee of Thailand have been preparing her extensively. Saisunee is currently in training at the National Training Center for Paralympic Athletes in Suphan Buri Province.
According to Thai News Agency, Saisunee regards the Asian Para Games as a crucial event. She has been diligently training to ensure she is ready for the competition. This year, she will participate in nine events, including three individual events, three team events, and three mixed team events, covering all fencing styles: ©p©e, foil, and saber. This marks the most events she has entered in a single competition, as previous regulations capped participation at six events per athlete. Despite age-related injuries, Saisunee has focused on maintaining her physical condition with more discipline than her younger counterparts, believing it will contribute to her success.
"This time, I secretly hope to win three gold medals in all three individual sword events. The formidable competitors are still from China, even though my old rival Tan Xumei isn't competing, I can't underestimate her," Saisunee stated.
Thailand is set to host the 2026 Wheelchair Fencing World Cup in Pattaya from August 30 to September 2, 2026. Over 200 athletes from across the globe are expected to participate. Saisunee plans to use this event to assess her readiness for the Asian Para Games.
Saisunee's previous achievements include winning one gold medal, four silver medals, and one bronze medal at the 4th Asian Para Games in Hangzhou, China, in 2023.
