Kuala lumpur: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the sea near Borneo Island, Malaysia, late last night. The tremors were felt in several areas of Sabah and Sarawak states. Initially, there were no reports of impact on Thailand. Relevant agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
According to Thai News Agency, the Department of Mineral Resources reported that on February 22, 2026, at 11:57 PM Thailand time, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 occurred with its epicenter in the sea near Borneo Island, at a depth of approximately 633 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 55 kilometers northwest of Kota Belud, Sabah, Malaysia.
Initial reports indicate that tremors were felt along the west coast of Sabah state, in several areas of Sarawak state, and in parts of west Malaysia. However, there have been no reports of serious damage.
For Thailand, the Department of Mineral Resources and the Meteorological Department estimate that the event will not affect the country because it is very deep and far from the Thai border.
