Bangkok: Abhisit Vejjajiva, leader of the Democrat Party and its prime ministerial candidate, has underlined the importance of honest governance and tackling illicit capital, while advocating for proactive diplomacy to address border conflicts. During his visit to Suan Luang Rama IX Park, Abhisit engaged with the public, reinforcing the party's commitment to integrity and independence from undue influence.
According to Thai News Agency, Abhisit, accompanied by deputy party leader Sakoltee Phatthiyakul and three parliamentary candidates from Bangkok, spent the morning interacting with park-goers and participating in exercise activities. The candidates included Dr. Kittipol Cherdchukitkul, Mr. Parin Thongpuss, and Ms. Veer Srivarathanabool, each representing different constituencies within Bangkok.
The event was marked by a welcoming atmosphere, with many people taking the opportunity to meet and photograph the party members. Abhisit noted that public feedback emphasized the need for the party to serve as a source of hope, particularly in combating illicit activities.
Addressing the potential formation of a new government, Abhisit stressed that integrity would be the cornerstone for any coalition involving the Democrat Party. He insisted on a government free from corruption and external control, one that promotes societal reconciliation rather than division.
In response to rising tensions along the Thai-Cambodian border, with reports of increased military presence, Abhisit advocated for "proactive diplomacy" to de-escalate the situation. He urged for diplomatic pressure on Cambodia to prevent further military reinforcement, emphasizing peace and stability over aggression.
Abhisit also highlighted the necessity of self-defense to protect national sovereignty, while expressing his commitment to enhancing military capabilities. However, he reiterated that the ultimate objective is to achieve long-term stability, allowing border communities to live peacefully and securely.
