Chanthaburi: Chanthaburi Province is one of the areas that has encountered problems of encroachment on state land by both capitalists and locals, such as Roi Rai Island in the Kirithar Hydroelectric Power Plant Project, which locals call Durian Island because it has been encroached upon by durian plantations all over the area. Recently, there have been negotiations to have locals leave the area within 30 days, along with expedited resolution of the problem of overlapping areas of state agencies.
According to Thai News Agency, the issue has drawn attention due to the economic significance of durian plantations in the region. The encroachment by both capitalists and locals has led to complications in the management of land meant for the Kirithar Hydroelectric Power Plant Project. The negotiations aim to address these concerns by requiring locals to vacate encroached areas within a month.
Efforts are being made to resolve the overlapping jurisdiction of various state agencies, which have complicated the enforcement of land use laws on Roi Rai Island. Authorities are working to streamline processes and ensure that the land is used in accordance with state regulations, while also considering the economic impact on local durian farmers.
The situation on Durian Island underscores the broader challenges faced in managing land resources in Chanthaburi Province, highlighting the need for effective regulatory frameworks to balance economic and environmental interests.
