Bangkok: AI experts point out that the "FishAI" app uses outdated techniques and limited data, reducing accuracy. AI and IoT experts highlight concerns over the "Thailand FishAI" application developed by the Department of Fisheries, emphasizing issues related to its accuracy and cost-effectiveness due to outdated technology and limitations in training data.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Tosaporn Wechsiri, President of the Maker Association of Thailand and CEO of Logisenses, explained that the application employs a vision AI system utilizing deep learning techniques to classify fish species. While this method is academically sound, its accuracy heavily relies on the quality and quantity of the training data used. Inadequate datasets or poor-quality images can lead to frequent inaccuracies in fish identification.
Mr. Tosaporn suggested that alternative technologies could be integrated to enhance efficiency, such as open-source AI models or pre-existing models with vision capabilities. Utilizing these technologies as the backend of the application could reduce development costs and allow funds to be redirected to other essential areas. This strategy also holds potential for expanding the system to include a comprehensive database of Thai fish species or fostering long-term fisheries knowledge.
Reporters disclosed that the "Project for the Development of an Artificial Intelligence System for Fish Species Classification for Participatory Fisheries Resource Survey and Conservation (Thailand FishAI)" was allocated a budget of 9,193,300 baht, according to a project planning document for digital technology projects under the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives.
Meanwhile, Mr. Watcharapol Khaokham, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives, who supervises the Department of Fisheries, has requested the Director-General of the Department to provide further clarification on the project. He stated his intention to verify the project's origins and, depending on the findings, decide whether a committee needs to be established for further investigation. Mr. Watcharapol assured that he will publicly clarify the matter once all facts are thoroughly reviewed.
