Bangkok: In the current era, we are moving beyond AI being merely a tool into an era where AI becomes a full-fledged representative. This change is not just about making our work easier, but about AI being able to perform tasks and make decisions instead of humans in many areas, which directly impacts job security, especially for people aged 35 and above, or Generation Y.
According to Thai News Agency, Gen Y individuals are facing significant stress due to their high salaries and increasing age. If companies need to cut costs or lay off employees, Gen Y is often the first group targeted. Furthermore, traditional recruitment norms often limited the age limit to 35, making it more difficult for those leaving the workforce at this age to find future opportunities.
The frightening thing about AI today is that it doesn't just help with typing; it can act as an agent, performing tasks for us, such as finding customers or even making decisions at certain stages. In some organizations, the transformation team's role is to explore what AI can do to replace humans, and if AI can, humans will become the "third option," or eventually be replaced.
A clear example is in the programming world. AI can write almost 100% of the code, leading to what's called the "end of junior" jobs, because companies no longer need to hire people to write basic code, but only require supervisors to check for accuracy.
The pressure to constantly improve to keep up with AI makes people in today's workforce feel like they're "running 100 meters for a 42-kilometer marathon"-having to push themselves to the limit at all times without stopping. This situation leads to mental toughness, with many experiencing depression, unexplained crying, or even requiring psychiatric hospitalization because they can't adapt to the fast pace of the work world.
Despite much talk about reskilling, the reality is that less than half of people are able to adapt and thrive in the modern world. The key to survival is to be outstanding, find a unique selling point, shift from being an employee to a controller of AI, and understand workflow. However, the risk of job loss due to AI is no longer a distant future phenomenon, but rather something that is already happening quietly. Therefore, being aware of the shift from tools to agents and maintaining mental balance amidst fierce competition is paramount for workers in today's workforce.
