Bangkok: Mr. Akranan Kankittinant, the Deputy Minister of Education, has initiated a strategic meeting with his advisory team to brainstorm on shaping the future of education in Thailand. The goal is to alleviate teachers' burdens, promote wider learning opportunities, and dismantle barriers within educational institutions, military camps, religious temples, and prisons, with an emphasis on elevating the National Education Council (NEC) as a key player in lifelong learning and expanding opportunities for vulnerable groups.
According to Thai News Agency, the meeting, led by Mr. Akranan, focused on devising integrated policies to tangibly reduce the workload of teachers, enhance learning quality for students across all age groups, and provide comprehensive access to education for vulnerable populations. This initiative represents a significant step in establishing a coherent policy direction, leveraging expertise from various sectors to create strategies that cater to the needs of teachers and students within Thailand's education system.
Mr. Akranan emphasized the importance of not only addressing immediate educational challenges but also establishing a robust foundation for progressive change in Thai education. He highlighted the necessity of making the reduction of teachers' workload a practical reality and ensuring that learning is accessible to everyone, particularly the vulnerable groups. Education should transcend traditional boundaries, reaching conscripts, monks, and prisoners, thus serving as a tool for personal development and reducing inequality sustainably. "Education must create opportunities, not limitations. The system needs to be adaptable, contemporary, and pertinent to learners of all ages. Education should be an opportunity for everyone, irrespective of their social status," he remarked.
In addition, Mr. Akranan mentioned that the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) will play a pivotal role in facilitating collaboration with various governmental, private, and community agencies to design short-term courses focusing on vocational and life skills. This initiative aims to foster a knowledge transfer system that offers citizens the chance to enhance their skills and re-enter the education system flexibly. The Ministry of Education plans to utilize the proposals from this meeting to develop policy measures that will drive Thai education towards greater efficiency, inclusivity, and equity.
