Bangkok: Amazon, the world's leading e-commerce company, is prioritizing environmental sustainability by replacing tens of thousands of its delivery vehicles with electric cars across the United States, despite rumors that the company might switch back to diesel vehicles.
According to Thai News Agency, in 2023, rumors circulated online that Amazon planned to revert to using diesel vehicles for delivery, after finding that electric vehicles were unsuitable for delivery services. However, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that rumors about a return to diesel-powered vehicles were just fake news online.
Information from aboutamazon.com confirms that Amazon currently has over 30,000 electric delivery vehicles across the United States and aims to increase that number to 100,000 by 2030. In addition, they have built 250 charging stations across the United States, with a total of over 50,000 charging points.
Amazon began using electric vehicles to deliver packages in 2022, after becoming a majority shareholder in Rivian, the electric vehicle manufacturer, in 2019. In 2024 alone, Amazon delivered billions of packages to customers using Rivian EDV electric vehicles.
With the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, Amazon has implemented several policies to reduce environmental pollution, including replacing plastic cushioning bags with recycled paper bags starting in 2024. Since 2015, Amazon has developed ways to reduce the weight of product packaging by 43%, reducing the total amount of parcels used by 3 million tons-equivalent to the weight of 285 Space Needles, Seattle's famous landmark, combined.
