Bangkok:Anutin Charnvirakul has accepted a proposal from Attawich Suwannabhakdi to evaluate the feasibility of creating retention ponds around Bangkok. The Department of Public Works and Town Planning has been tasked with this investigation, and if viable, the project can proceed immediately since the necessary budget is already available.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin, who is both the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, emphasized that these flood retention basins are part of the water storage and drainage strategy managed by the Royal Irrigation Department. He has directed the National Water Resources Office to explore expanding these areas as part of the government's response to recent floods.
The initiative aims to develop basins that can effectively store water following floods, providing a resource during the dry season. Anutin highlighted the importance of urgent action and ongoing studies to ensure readiness before the dry season begins.
In addition to the Bangkok initiative, the Royal Irrigation Department has plans to expand water retention facilities nationwide. These efforts are coordinated with provincial and local authorities, supported by the government, to construct storage facilities that prevent water shortages while managing excess water during floods.
