Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, convened a meeting with Bhumjaithai Party members ahead of a no-confidence vote, emphasizing that voting is the prerogative of the MPs. He reassured members not to expel Ekarat Changlao, highlighting the upcoming election in two years and advising against actions that could cause discord.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin, leading the Bhumjaithai Party, chaired a meeting where he underscored the tradition of resolving party decisions following a no-confidence debate. He expressed gratitude to the MPs for their participation and reiterated his commitment to his responsibilities. As part of the coalition government, the Bhumjaithai Party is expected to support the Prime Minister; however, MPs were encouraged to voice any concerns during the meeting.
Anutin clarified that the meeting’s purpose was not to seek a party resolution but to affirm the MPs’ privilege to vote. The party, with a total of 69 votes, unanimously supported the Prime Minister. Despite Ekarat Changlao’s absence from party activities, Anutin confirmed his status as an MP within the coalition government. Anutin explained that expulsion from the party without valid reasons, such as voting against the majority, is not permissible. Ekarat’s actions did not warrant such measures.
Addressing speculation about Ekarat’s potential expulsion due to interactions with other parties, Anutin downplayed the issue, noting that it wasn’t a cross-party shift nor did it affect government votes. He emphasized that with elections approaching in two years, it was unnecessary to engage in actions that might foster ill feelings among party members.
During the coalition government party meeting, Prime Minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra made an appearance, greeting Bhumjaithai Party Secretary-General Chaichanok Chidchob humorously as she entered the meeting room, adding a moment of levity to the proceedings.
