Anutin Asserts Prime Minister’s Responsibility in Thai-Cambodian Border Conflict

Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul insists that the Prime Minister cannot distance himself from the issue concerning the Thai-Cambodian border and must take responsibility for the situation. He stated that discussions with President Trump highlighted Thailand’s strong and appropriate response. Anutin emphasized that there is no reason to back down, asserting that Thailand is not at fault and that reconciliation requires compromise from both sides.

According to Thai News Agency, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul addressed questions on the news program “Karmakorn Khao, Off-Screen Talk” regarding his visits to evacuation centers in Buriram and Surin provinces. During these visits, he assured residents that safety is a priority and reassured soldiers on the borders to focus on their duties. He has maintained communication with security forces about protecting Thailand’s territory and sovereignty, confirming that current military efforts are proceeding as planned.

Anutin explained that the military’s goal in occupying certain territories was not to destroy capabilities but to prompt a retreat from opposing forces, demonstrating that Thailand’s sovereignty cannot be violated. He stressed the importance of reaching a point where clashes are unnecessary, despite the current need for confrontation to achieve peace.

Addressing criticism of being detached, Anutin clarified that as Prime Minister, he cannot be indifferent, as the responsibility for national security rests with the government. He noted that decisions about military support and strategy are made in consultation with the National Security Council.

Anutin also commented on claims that Cambodia might be using the border conflict to divert attention from internal issues related to asset seizures linked to scammers. He remarked that the conflict will not overshadow the presence of landmines and explosive devices in the area.

In a conversation with US President Donald Trump, Anutin discussed reports claiming no explosive devices were present, which he refuted based on firsthand observations. He shared visual evidence of Thailand’s military actions, highlighting the strength of their response.

Anutin conveyed to Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim the importance of communicating with Cambodia about a ceasefire. He emphasized that a resolution requires both sides to back down, and he reiterated Thailand’s commitment to peace while acknowledging the challenges of protecting sovereignty.

He concluded by highlighting the need for ongoing dialogue and cooperation, expressing his desire to maintain peaceful relations with neighboring countries while ensuring the safety and security of both Thai citizens and civilians on the opposing side. Anutin affirmed his close relationship with Prime Minister Anwar and the importance of mutual understanding in addressing the conflict.
