Bangkok: Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, has declared snooker to be a sport and is set to challenge any government opposition to its decriminalization under the Gambling Act. Despite not yet signing off on removing snooker from the list of gambling games, Anutin is determined to counter any dissenting opinions from government agencies.

According to Thai News Agency, Anutin addressed concerns from MPs of the People's Party regarding his hesitation to remove snooker from the Gambling Act of 1935. He argued that maintaining its status under the act does not promote the sport and promised to review the matter further. Anutin plans to consult with the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, indicating that the decision is still under consideration.

In response to leaked documents suggesting the Prime Minister's disapproval, Anutin clarified that the matter had not yet reached his desk. He emphasized his personal connection to snooker, recalling his past achievements as a runner-up in the sport despite his poor eyesight. Anutin reiterated that, in his experience, snooker and billiards were not vices but skill-enhancing activities.

Addressing concerns about potential loopholes for illegal activities, Anutin stated that the primary issue is gambling, but not in the form of casinos or gambling dens. He expressed the need to hear opinions from others before making a decision. However, he remains firm in his stance, ready to advocate for the recognition of snooker as a legitimate sport if faced with opposition from government agencies.
