Anutin Charnvirakul Leads Buddhist Ceremony Celebrating Longevity of Somdej Phra Maharatchamongkol Muni

Bangkok: Minister Anutin Charnvirakul led Buddhist devotees in a Buddhist chanting ceremony to celebrate the 73rd birthday of Somdej Phra Maharatchamongkol Muni (Somdej Thongchai), Chief Abbot of the Central Region and Assistant Abbot of Wat Traimit Witthayaram.

According to Thai News Agency, the ceremony was attended by Anutin Charnvirakul, who also serves as Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. The event, held at Wat Traimit Witthayaram Worawihan, was presided over by Somdej Phra Phutthacharn, Chief Abbot of the Eastern Region. The ceremony featured prominent figures, including Mr. Arsit Sampantharat, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, and various directors-general from government departments, along with Buddhist devotees and disciples.

During the ceremony, Anutin Charnvirakul paid respects to Somdej Phra Phutthacharn and Somdej Phra Maharatchamongkol Muni by offering traditional Thai offerings, including incense, candles, and a floral arrangement. Somdej Phra Phutthacharn led the worship of the Triple Gem, and the Prime Minister participated in the Buddhist chanting ceremony.

Somdej Phra Maha Ratchamongkol Muni (Thongchai Thammachot), born in 1953 in Chonburi Province, was ordained as a monk in 1974. His academic achievements include the highest levels of Buddhist and Pali scholarship, and a Doctor of Education degree from Northern University, Philippines. He holds several ecclesiastical and administrative positions, contributing significantly to the promotion of Chinese language education in Thailand.

His contributions in education have been recognized internationally, earning him accolades such as the World's Outstanding Confucius Classroom Award from Hanban Headquarters, China. He also holds honorary doctorates from several Thai universities, highlighting his influence in both religious and educational spheres.
