Bangkok: Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Anutin Charnvirakul underscored the importance of labor safety in driving the Thai economy during a recent security briefing. He stressed that no amount of financial compensation can equate to the loss of life, emphasizing the critical role of safety in the workplace. Anutin highlighted that severance pay for victims of workplace accidents, even if it amounts to 10 or 5 months' salary, falls short of addressing the real loss. He assured that there is no need to fear the relocation of production bases by investors, as Thailand has robust government support to prevent such moves.
According to Thai News Agency, Anutin presided over the opening ceremony of the 38th National Occupational Safety and Health Conference, organized by the Ministry of Labour through the Institute for the Promotion of Occupational Safety, Health and Environment (Public Organization) or IPO. He congratulated companies that received awards for occupational safety and health, indicating tangible progress in raising safety standards in Thailand. Anutin drew from his own experience as a former construction engineer, where he recognized the significance of safety not only in the working environment but also for the workers themselves. He observed that global companies prioritize occupational health and safety, which instilled in him a deep understanding of its importance.
Anutin shared that upon returning to work in Thailand, he realized safety's crucial role in improving work efficiency and productivity. He noted that organizations prioritizing safety deliver higher productivity, transforming costs into clear profits over time. This shift allows executives to focus on other business aspects without worrying about accidents or employee safety. He emphasized that this forms a vital foundation for the sustainable development and growth of the Thai economy.
He further noted his involvement in occupational health during his tenure as Minister of Public Health, which aligned well with the Ministry of Labour's objectives. As Deputy Prime Minister, he provided full support for these initiatives. Anutin expressed confidence in Mr. Chulaphan's administration, assuring that the government is ready to support and cooperate in all aspects to ensure workplace safety for all Thai people and workers from neighboring countries. He emphasized building a sustainable safety culture to prevent accidents proactively.
Anutin acknowledged the challenge of preventing foreign investment relocation but highlighted Thailand's strengths in transportation and logistics. He asserted that the government's responsibility is to retain customers and investors while acknowledging the need for a comprehensive package to attract foreign investment. He concluded by emphasizing that he and his family, coming from a background of factory ownership, understand the importance of safety ingrained in their upbringing. The Prime Minister's remarks were followed by a tour of various booths and photo sessions with award-winning executives.
