Arrest of Transnational Crime Suspect Uthai Kanaphiwat Unveils Drug Trafficking Operation

Bangkok: Uthai Kanaphiwat, 47, was escorted to the site where he disposed of an elephant-shaped cloth bag containing drugs before his arrest record was finalized. The police, having taken Uthai to the scene, recorded his arrest and subsequently handed him over to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation. Uthai is scheduled to be remanded in custody tomorrow morning.

According to Thai News Agency, Police Major General Teeradet Thamsuthee, Deputy Commander of the Bangkok Metropolitan Police, provided an update on the arrest of Uthai Kanaphiwat, who is implicated in a transnational crime case. CCTV footage reportedly captured Uthai carrying a box with a bag of drugs intended for Ms. Meena, a Thai flight attendant. Alongside Uthai, 59-year-old Atirat Suphian, the registered owner of a Toyota vehicle, has been detained and charged with the unauthorized sale and export of Category 1 narcotics, specifically heroin. Both individuals are now under the custody of the Narcotics Suppression Division.

Initially, Uthai denied any connection to Ms. Meena, stating he was merely paid to deliver the box. He admitted to being compensated 60,000 baht per trip for transporting the heroin from Chiang Kham District, Phayao Province, to the flight attendant. Authorities are continuing their efforts to trace the drugs' origin and intended destination.

The investigation team has emphasized that the suspects' Hmong ethnicity does not hinder their efforts. They are actively pursuing those who orchestrated the crime. Uthai was taken to various locations he confessed to using for disposing of cloth bags, including areas alongside roads in Mueang District, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province, where searches continued into the early hours.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Somboon Thiankhao, Deputy Commander of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau, disclosed that Uthai's initial interrogation resulted in confessions. Plans are in place to present him before the court for remand on Monday, July 6th.

Further investigation revealed that Uthai had changed his phone after the news of Ms. Meena's arrest, and had destroyed drugs, indicating his proficiency in eliminating evidence. He claimed only to have transported drugs three times. The investigation is ongoing and expanding.

Additionally, inquiries into an alias "Pang that means Pang," believed to be contacting individuals to carry goods to Australia, have uncovered a separate network responsible for the international transportation of goods. This operation functions through a division of labor and is being scrutinized on both domestic and international fronts.
