Bangkok: An Assistant Secretary of Parliament has raised concerns over a scam involving a fraudster using a fake name and photo to deceive individuals into investing. The scam, which has affected numerous victims, was executed by a foreign individual, according to the Assistant Secretary.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Thakanit Pornthongprasert, Assistant Secretary to the President of the National Assembly, addressed a complaint sent to Mr. Wan Muhammad Noor Matha, President of the National Assembly. The complaint alleged that scammers impersonated Mr. Thakanit to trick people into investing through fake social media accounts. More than 30 such accounts were reportedly used to lure victims into transferring money.

Mr. Thakanit reported the issue to Bueng Kum Police Station on January 13, 2023, and again on November 7, 2024. Additionally, he filed a complaint with the Technology Crime Investigation Division 1 (TCSD 1) on December 3, 2024. However, according to a report on February 11, 2025, the investigation was suggested to be suspended due to the service provider residing abroad, leaving no evidence to identify the perpetrator.

The investigation revealed that the fraudulent accounts featured misspelled names or used other people’s photos, suggesting the involvement of foreign nationals. Mr. Thakanit noted that a victim who initially filed a complaint against him had later withdrawn it after reaching an understanding with the police.

Mr. Thakanit advised any victims to file complaints with the appropriate authorities, such as the police or the Royal Thai Police (RTP), to initiate legal proceedings. He emphasized that filing complaints with unrelated agencies could harm his reputation, as he is not involved in the crime. Moreover, Mr. Thakanit stated his intent to take legal action if further false complaints are lodged against him without evidence.
