Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Laughing Gas Factory

Sanaa:The Metropolitan Police Investigation Division, in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), raided the country's largest illegal laughing gas factory and warehouse. Officials seized 1,652 ready-to-sell gas cylinders, over 4,200 empty cylinders, and a trailer truck carrying gas cylinders weighing a total of 72 tons, valued at over 72 million baht.

According to Thai News Agency, the Sure Before Share Center verified with the FDA that laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, is a controlled substance under the Drug Act B.E. 2510 and the Food Act B.E. 2522. It is prohibited to sell it in balloons to the public, and such use is illegal.

Nitrous oxide is a colorless, non-flammable gas used medically for its numbing properties in dental work, childbirth, and minor surgeries. It is also used in industries like car airbags and whipped cream dispensers. However, recreational inhalation from balloons poses severe health risks.

Inhaling nitrous oxide can lead to acute oxygen deprivation, causing dizziness, unconsciousness, and in severe cases, heart failure or death. Long-term use can result in nervous system damage, vitamin B12 deficiency, and other serious health issues.

Signs of potential nitrous oxide abuse include the presence of balloons, gas cans, and related equipment, along with behavioral changes. If abuse is suspected, immediate medical consultation is advised.

Withdrawal from long-term use can cause symptoms such as anxiety, muscle weakness, and concentration problems. The Thai FDA strictly regulates nitrous oxide for medical and industrial use, with severe penalties for illegal manufacture, sale, or importation.
