Bangkok Bank Clarifies Fund Loss Due to System Malfunction, Not Cyber Attack

Bangkok: Bangkok Bank clarified that the loss of funds in customer accounts was due to a system malfunction, not a cyberattack. Some accounts are experiencing negative balances during the system’s repairs, but the bank confirmed that all transactions have been completely restored.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Chairit Anuchitvorawong, Senior Executive Vice President of Bangkok Bank Public Company Limited, stated that the bank’s system malfunction occurred on Monday night, September 1, 2015. This resulted in the bank’s system not recording certain deposit transactions made between 9:06 PM and 11:00 PM, resulting in the incorrect balances in the customer accounts, as previously reported. The bank completed the correction of the transaction recording in the customer accounts by 3:30 PM on Tuesday, September 2, 2015. The transaction appears as an “Adjustment Item” in the affected customer accounts.

However, some customers are currently experiencing negative balances in their accounts due to transactions exceeding the actual account balance between 3:00 AM on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and before the bank completes the above transaction update at 3:30 PM. The bank has notified these customers of the incident.

Mr. Chairit added that the incident was not caused by a cyber attack and the bank sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience caused.
