Bangkok Blueprint Unveiled at IMF-World Bank Event to Combat Online Financial Fraud

Bangkok:Thailand has taken a significant step in the fight against online financial fraud with the unveiling of the 'Bangkok Blueprint' at the IMF-World Bank event. The blueprint, a collaborative effort between the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank Group, and Bank of Thailand (BOT), outlines 12 strategies under five pillars aimed at addressing legal development, detecting suspicious transactions, enabling cross-border data sharing, and providing victim redress.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekkapop Pienpises, Spokesperson for the Prime Minister's Office, highlighted the achievements at the IMF and World Bank forums, where Thailand's participation was instrumental. The IMF plans to expand this initiative to its member countries, with support from the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) for Thailand's role in establishing global standards.

Mr. Ekkapop revealed that Ms. Kristalina Georgieva, Managing Director of the IMF, emphasized using the cyber governance and risk assessment framework to advise member countries. This framework is a critical component of the initiative and is expected to evolve into international best practices.

Thailand has demonstrated its capability in combating fraud through projects like Connect the Dots and the AOC 1441 center, leading to a notable decline in financial fraud losses. The Bank of Thailand reported a decrease from over 43 billion baht in 2024 to 32 billion baht in 2025, and nearly 9 billion baht in the first half of 2026.

Mr. Matthias Kormann, Secretary-General of the OECD, acknowledged Thailand's contributions at the Future-Ready Economy 2026 event. The OECD is keen on integrating Thailand's experiences into international standards-setting forums. Thailand is in the process of becoming an OECD member, with ongoing reviews of its laws and policies by 25 committees.

The OECD also projects that a comprehensive digital economy framework in ASEAN could enhance Thailand's regional trade by 24% and increase its overall trade value by 5% in the long term.

During the event, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul hosted a Welcome Dinner at Government House, showcasing Thai culture through cuisine, performing arts, and creative works by young people.

Mr. Ekkapop emphasized that the meeting not only provided a platform for Thailand to share its experience with global economic leaders but also to welcome the world to explore the potential of Thai culture and economy. The government plans to ensure that the collaborative efforts from this meeting translate into effective preventive measures and tangible benefits for the Thai people.
