Bangkok Clinic Cosmetic Surgery Results in Unconsciousness, Family Faces Mounting Medical Bills

Bangkok: Relatives are urgently seeking assistance after their 37-year-old family member fell unconscious following cosmetic surgery at a prominent Bangkok clinic, amassing medical bills in the millions of baht.

According to Thai News Agency, the incident has drawn attention as Mr. Jiraphat, the younger brother of the victim, reached out to the Sai Mai Must Survive Facebook page's complaint center in Bangkok. The older brother had undergone rhinoplasty and chin reshaping surgery at a well-known local clinic, which led to severe postoperative complications necessitating hospitalization. Since the surgery on March 4th, the patient remains unconscious.

The younger brother recounted the events, stating that the surgery, initially scheduled for 4:00 PM, was delayed by an hour. He and another sibling waited outside the clinic until 12:30 AM on March 5th, when staff informed them of the patient's abnormal symptoms, including a rapid heartbeat and irregular blood gas levels. The patient was promptly admitted to a hospital, where doctors found him unconscious, intubated, and in the ICU. Complications such as myocardial issues, acute kidney failure requiring dialysis, high fever, and pulmonary fluid have since been identified. Four days post-surgery, recovery remains elusive.

Prior to the procedure, the patient was reportedly in good health, engaged in regular exercise, and had no known medical conditions. The family is now grappling with medical expenses surpassing 1 million baht and is uncertain about financial liability. Although the clinic has been in contact, they have yet to assume responsibility for the costs, citing the need for hospital diagnosis to ascertain the cause of the complications. The family insists on suitable treatment and expects the clinic to cover the expenses, given the patient's role as the family's primary earner.

In pursuit of accountability, the family has lodged a police report and is seeking legal counsel to explore potential legal action if the clinic fails to clarify its stance.

The Sai Mai Must Survive Facebook page has declared its intention to liaise with the Department of Health Service Support, Ministry of Public Health, to scrutinize the clinic's treatment procedures, anesthetic use, and adherence to medical standards, aiming to ensure justice for all parties involved.
