Bangkok: The Bangkok Election Commission is intensively preparing for the election of the Bangkok governor and Bangkok council members, with particular concern about the impending 180-day period leading up to the elections.
According to Thai News Agency, the current term for the governor and council members will conclude on May 21, 2026. During a recent meeting led by Acting Director of the Election Commission of Bangkok, Lieutenant Colonel Samphan Saengkhamlert, officials discussed laws, regulations, and procedures pertinent to the upcoming elections. The commission has expressed concern over the potential for legal violations during the campaign period, particularly during festivals, and has urged candidates to exercise caution.
Acting Sub-Lieutenant Samphan invited prospective candidates to a briefing to clarify permissible actions during the campaign period, which begins on November 22nd. The elections for the Bangkok governor and council members will coincide with those for the mayor and Pattaya City council members. Candidates are advised to avoid illegal activities, especially during the New Year, Children’s Day, and Songkran festivals. The election will not include debates due to the risk of slander and deception, placing responsibility on organizers if debates are held.
The Director of the Bangkok Election Commission has highlighted concerns regarding prohibited practices within the 180-day period, such as offering gifts or hosting parties. Candidates must ensure they meet all qualifications and submit complete documentation to avoid legal repercussions, including potential disqualification, imprisonment, and financial penalties. The commission anticipates an increase in candidate numbers compared to the previous election, which saw nearly 500 applicants, and several political parties have already announced their candidates.
The timeline for the elections has been set, with announcements beginning on May 23, applications accepted from May 25-29, and election day scheduled for July 5, 2026. If there are no complaints, the election results will be declared by August 4. However, should there be no issues, results could be announced as early as July 3.
