Bangkok: Dog and cat owners in Bangkok are now required to register their pets under a new law aimed at enhancing safety for both humans and animals. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s regulation, which mandates animal registration, the use of leashes, and adherence to specific animal-keeping guidelines, will come into effect on January 10, 2026. Violators of the law will face penalties.
According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Ekwaranyu Amrapal, spokesman for Bangkok, announced that the regulation was published in the Government Gazette on January 15, 2025. The law emphasizes the safety of both humans and animals, and pet owners are urged to familiarize themselves with the regulation to avoid legal repercussions.
The regulation stipulates the maximum number of pets allowed based on the size of the area. For large mammals such as cows and horses, no more than one animal is permitted per 50 square wah. Small mammals like goats and pigs are limited to three per 50 square wah. Poultry regulations vary, with one large bird like an ostrich allowed per 50 square meters and up to five small birds per square meter.
The regulation prohibits raising or releasing controlled animals in public places or roads, except for specific cases such as treating illnesses or for government or charitable activities. Dog and cat owners must register their pets within 120 days of birth or 30 days of bringing them into Bangkok. The number of pets allowed varies based on accommodation, ranging from one pet in smaller rental units to six pets on land areas of 100 square wah or more.
Owners are required to use strong leashes and appropriate equipment when taking pets outside. Special control measures, including muzzles and short leashes, are mandated for dangerous breeds. Free microchipping, rabies vaccinations, and spaying/neutering services are available at eight designated veterinary clinics across Bangkok.
The clinics include Bangkok Veterinary Clinic 1 in Bang Rak District and others located in various districts such as Min Buri and Chatuchak. Pet owners are encouraged to contact the clinics directly for more information on available services.
