Bangkok Faces Heavy Rainfall and Flooding Amid Summer Storm

Bangkok: Rain fell in Bangkok last night, with Lat Phrao District suffering the heaviest at 130 mm. The Meteorological Department revealed that the summer storm will continue to have an impact until May 12. Last night, many areas in Bangkok experienced heavy rain that exceeded the drainage capacity, causing flooding. During the season change period, continuous monitoring is still needed.

According to Thai News Agency, Mr. Somkuan Tonjan, Director of the Weather Forecast Division, Meteorological Department, reported that the accumulated rainfall in Bangkok over the past 24 hours (May 10 at 7:00 a.m. – May 11 at 7:00 a.m.) was highest at the PTT station, Khlong Lat Phrao, at 130.0 millimeters, followed by Bang Khen station at 123.0 millimeters, Khlong Bang Bua at 109.5 millimeters, Phaya Thai District Office at 106.0 millimeters, and Saphan Khwa measuring point at 105.0 millimeters.

Many areas in the northern part of Bangkok, from Lak Si, Don Mueang, Chatuchak, Bang Khen, including Phaya Thai, Huai Khwang, an
d Bang Sue, have accumulated rainfall exceeding 90 millimeters, resulting in flooding in many areas, especially in low-lying areas or areas with limited drainage systems. Bangkok has a drainage capacity of approximately 60 millimeters per 24 hours, so in many areas the amount of rainfall exceeds the drainage capacity by two times.

The current volatile weather is a result of the transition into the rainy season, with the southwesterly winds becoming stronger and a cold air mass from northern Vietnam colliding with the hot weather of Thailand, causing heavy rain in many areas. It is warned that Bangkok and its vicinity still have a chance of being affected by summer storms until May 12, 2025, with thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rain in some areas.

People in risk areas should be aware of the dangers of volatile weather, avoid being near large trees or unstable structures, and closely follow warning announcements from the Meteorological Department.
