Bangkok Faces Severe Overnight Rainfall, Lak Si District Hit Hardest

Bangkok: Heavy rain swept across Bangkok, with Lak Si district recording the highest rainfall at 131.5 mm, leading to flooding in many areas. Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt closely monitored the situation, which saw significant downpours throughout the capital. However, by morning, most of the floodwater had receded.

According to Thai News Agency, Governor Chadchart observed the flood situation from the Flood Prevention System Control Center at Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Drainage and Sewerage Office 2 in Din Daeng. He explained that the heavy rain resulted from a weakening high-pressure system that allowed a low-pressure trough to bring rain into Bangkok. The rain ceased around 2:00 AM, with Lak Si District experiencing the highest rainfall at 131.5 mm, followed by Bang Na District Office with 116.5 mm, Phra Khanong District Office with 115.5 mm, and Phra Khanong Pumping Station in Khlong Toei District with 105.5 mm.

The governor noted that the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s drainage system is equipped to manage 60 mm of water, but several areas surpassed this threshold, resulting in flooding. BMA officials worked tirelessly throughout the night to address the water levels. By 10:00 AM, most areas were nearly dry, though minor flooding remained in smaller alleys. Areas of particular concern due to ongoing flooding, exacerbated by road construction and their low-lying nature, include Chang Akat Uthit Road (Soi 15) in Don Mueang District and On Nut Road (Soi 59). The governor emphasized the need for long-term solutions to address these issues.
