Bangkok: Chatchart Sittipunt, the Governor of Bangkok, has announced his resignation to pursue a second term in office. He shared this decision with the press at 5:00 PM today, stating that his resignation is effective immediately at 5:00 PM. The decision was made to enable him to attend his son's graduation ceremony abroad without impacting official duties or necessitating the appointment of an acting governor. Chatchart confirmed his intention to run for the position of Bangkok governor once more.
According to Thai News Agency, Chatchart's campaign for the upcoming election will center on boosting urban productivity and transforming Bangkok into a globally competitive economic hub. The focus will be on utilizing resources efficiently to maximize output and enhancing city efficiency through technology, emphasizing happiness, opportunity, and hope. In recent years, the quality of life in the city has reportedly improved, and going forward, Chatchart aims to leverage technology to elevate Bangkok's status as an economic center.
When questioned about potential administrative gaps following his resignation, Chatchart expressed confidence in his team, noting that all civil servants will remain and policies will continue. He views the transitional period as a democratic norm that allows the public to choose new leaders. Despite his departure, he remains concerned about certain projects, such as the Thonburi wastewater treatment plant, and has instructed the Permanent Secretary of Bangkok to oversee its progress during the transition.
Chatchart also shared plans to visit the Don Mueang district, an area significantly affected by flooding during his tenure. He is optimistic that road improvements in the district are on track for completion.
Reflecting on his resignation, Chatchart remarked that he now returns to life as a regular citizen, planning to commute by bicycle and Skytrain. He also addressed comments from Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, who rated his performance highly. Chatchart expressed gratitude and emphasized the importance of collaboration with councilors from all political parties, urging the public to elect dedicated and capable councilors.
Discussing the competitive nature of the upcoming election, Chatchart welcomed the presence of multiple candidates, including People's Party candidate Mr. Chaiwat Sathavorawichit and Democrat Party candidate Mr. Anucha Burapachaisri. He views the competition as a positive development, offering the public a range of options to consider. Additionally, he acknowledged the candidacy of a former Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner, who he believes possesses a strong understanding of the city's challenges.
