Bangkok: Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has ordered urgent measures for water drainage in Bangkok following heavy rains across the city, preparing for more rain expected tonight. Governor Chadchart chaired a crucial meeting attended by Deputy Governor Wisanu Subsompol, Jessada Chandraprapha, Director of the Drainage and Sewerage Department, as well as other key executives and officials to assess the water drainage situation after last night’s downpour and to strategize for the anticipated rainfall this evening.
According to Thai News Agency, Bangkok experienced significant rainfall on the night of November 2nd due to a low-pressure trough moving over northern Thailand, following the weakening of a high-pressure system from China. This resulted in severe rain in several areas of the city, which ceased around 2:00 AM on November 3rd. The heaviest rainfall recorded was 131.5 mm at the Government Complex-Chaeng Watthana Road in Lak Si District, followed by 116.5 mm at the Bang Na District Office, 115.5 mm at the Phra Khanong District Office, and 105.5 mm at the Phra Khanong Pumping Station in Khlong Toei District.
In response, Governor Chadchart has directed the Drainage and Sewerage Office to expedite the opening of floodgates and ensure all water pumping stations are operating at full capacity to drain excess water into the Chao Phraya River. He has also mandated checks on the readiness of main pumping stations, drainage tunnels, and critical monitoring points to ensure they can manage the expected rainfall tonight effectively.
The Drainage and Sewerage Department is actively coordinating with relevant agencies, deploying teams to inspect areas prone to recurrent flooding, clear drainage pipes and stormwater intakes, and remove any debris that could block efficient water drainage.
