Bangkok:Authorities in Bangkok have initiated a significant infrastructure project to move power and telecommunications cables underground in key commercial areas. This development comes in preparation for the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings set to take place in October 2026.

According to Thai News Agency, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) and the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) are spearheading the removal of overhead lines and utility poles along major roads such as Rama IV, Sathorn, and Wireless. The initiative involves burying telecommunication cables across three routes totaling 11.3 kilometers, specifically a 9-kilometer stretch on Rama IV Road, 1.5 kilometers on Sathorn Road, and 0.8 kilometers on Wireless Road. Additionally, workers are organizing cables and removing utility poles along other sections.

Officials highlighted that this project aims to enhance grid stability, boost urban safety, and improve the city's landscape in time for the international summit scheduled from October 12 to 18, 2026. MEA Deputy Governor Rachen Anwech emphasized the project's goal to bolster the reliability of the power distribution system and enhance the city's overall appearance. The initiative aligns with governmental urban development policies intended to mitigate public hazards and support economic activity in central business districts during major international events.
