Bangkok: The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner inspected Khao San Road and emphasized that the overall situation was orderly. Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam, Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, inspected Khao San Road in preparation for the 2026 Songkran Festival, emphasizing that overall operations are orderly and that tourist numbers continue to pour in, expected to reach 100,000 people per day. He also announced the use of "smart cameras" to enhance security.
According to Thai News Agency, Pol. Lt. Gen. Siam Boonsom, Commander of the Metropolitan Police (MPD), inspected the Khao San Road area during the Songkran festival of 2026 and revealed that overall, security during Songkran in Bangkok has been orderly, with no reported fights or violence. Officers will continue patrolling and providing information to tourists.
Today's field visit will involve speaking with and explaining the situation to both Thai and foreign tourists celebrating Songkran on Khao San Road. The overall atmosphere appears orderly, and no groups have been found to be causing trouble or committing any illegal acts.
Yesterday (April 12th), approximately 30,000 tourists visited Khao San Road, even though it wasn't an official festival day. Today (April 13th), the number is expected to continue increasing since noon. Khao San Road can accommodate a maximum of 80,000 tourists. If it reaches full capacity, checkpoints will be closed, entry will be restricted, and visitors will be advised to participate in water splashing activities in the surrounding areas instead.
It is expected that this year's Songkran festival will see at least 100,000 tourists per day, similar to last year. Despite the ongoing conflict, higher living costs, and increased travel expenses this year, Songkran tourism is considered to have been unaffected.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Police Commissioner further stated that officers are using an AI-powered camera system for security and screening tourists. This system has already identified several individuals with outstanding arrest warrants, assuring tourists visiting the area of their safety.
