Bangkok:The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) is upgrading the city's infrastructure by burying power and communication cables underground along Rama IV, Sathorn, and Witthayu roads. This effort is part of a larger initiative to enhance the city's landscape and strengthen the stability of its power system in preparation for the 2026 IMF and World Bank summits.
According to Thai News Agency, the project was inaugurated by Mr. Rachain Anvech, Deputy Governor of MEA, at a ceremony in front of the U Chu Liang Building on Rama IV Road. The event was attended by Associate Professor Chatchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, along with MEA executives and representatives from partner agencies. This initiative is part of the 2026 plan to convert overhead power lines to underground lines, improving the city's aesthetic appeal and electrical safety in advance of the World Bank Group Annual Meetings scheduled for October 12-18, 2026.
The project aligns with the government and Ministry of Interior's "ACTION 5 PLUS" policy, which focuses on disaster prevention, sustainable urban development, and enhancing safety. It aims to improve the quality and stability of the electricity distribution system, support Bangkok's image as a world-class tourist destination, and stimulate trade and service businesses in key economic zones. The initiative is designed to create long-term benefits for the public and ensure Bangkok's readiness for international financial representatives attending the 2026 meetings.
MEA's Deputy Governor stated that the authority, as a state-owned enterprise focused on smart energy systems, has collaborated with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, and telecommunications operators for this project. The work involves burying telecommunications cables underground along three routes totaling 11.3 kilometers, organizing cables in Soi Suan Plu, and removing electricity poles on Rama IV Road.
Advanced engineering techniques and meticulous traffic management are being employed to minimize public impact, resulting in improved aesthetics and power system stability. MEA is committed to advancing underground power line projects to make Bangkok a safe, modern, and environmentally friendly ASEAN metropolis.
